The urge to paint landscapes comes from within, from some deep recesses of
the human spirit that find nourishment in the beauty, solace and comfort
provided by nature...This impulse is particularly apparent among American
artists of the last two centuries...Jim Caldwell's panoramic depictions of the
California landscape fall entirely within this noble tradition... Whether
depicting the dramatic coastal landscape along Big Sur, the golden fields of
dry grasses in the fields above Stanford, the gentle reflections of distant
hills in the calm waters of Crystal Springs, or ancient oaks rising
majestically from the rolling hills of Petaluma, Caldwell captures the
grandeur of nature as well as its ephemeral beauty.
From the introduction by Arthur Wheelock, curator of Northern Baroque
painting at the National Gallery of Art.

Jim Caldwell's Golden Coast is a place of wrinkled and sparsely wooded
ridges, of chalk-faced cliffs falling to the Pacific, of fog that pours over
coastal hills. It is a place of still and mirroring lakes, of clouds that pop
out of a brilliant sky, of a horizon that stretches off the canvas to
infinity. It is a place of yellow grass shining with dew in the early
morning, of green oaks offering midday shelter, of purple shadows in the late
afternoon. The few crops that man has planted here are orderly and
unobtrusive. The creatures he has brought are unhurried, well-fed cows.
